The Time Left

Hospice Antea - Roma, Italia
2018-2020

The relationship with illness and imminent death, one’s own and that of others, the detachment from loved ones, are the most profound and painful life issues, but also the most unexplored and marginalized during the course of our existence.
In our mind, death and frailty have a cognitive and rational mental space that is far from reach a true and deep awareness.

Life described from the reversed perspective of death is the core issue of the photographic project The Time Left, started in 2018 and still ongoing. Photos have been taken in the Hospice of Antea, a foundation that from over 30 years is providing palliative care, in Hospice as well as in their owns homes, to patients who are no longer curable.

With my pictures I try to be in deep contact with the patients, exploring their gestures in daily life as well as their environment. I am also intrigued by body details, as the hands, that reveal the physical changes imposed by disease and coming death. My attention is often captured by environment details, as well as by the objects that I find in the patients’ rooms, that speak to me of life and death through an intimate and symbolic language.
